Marketing to Children Should be Regulated Duke Unique ID: 0628784 Course ID: PSY 425 Introduction Advertisers targeting children have been a source of public debate since the 1970s. In the earliest review of marketing to children, Adler (1977) identifies specific risk factors, which include unfair techniques, long-term effects on the values, attitudes, and the behavior of children. More recently, however, the scope of public concern has expanded to additional aspects, such as the obesity epidemic, sexual promiscuity, youth violence, diminishing creativity, and materialism. At the same time, two recent trends have increased advertisers’ interest in children (Calvert, 2008). One the one hand, the purchasing power of children has increased in recent years. One the other hand, while youth-directed television advertising continues to play a large role in marketing strategies, interactive technologies have helped create new methods of advertising to children. Increasing efforts to reach younger audiences will likely compound some of the preexisting negative effects of targeting children (Strasburger, 2006). This paper argues for increasing regulation of marketing efforts targeting children for three primary reasons. First, children’s limited cognitive ability makes judging advertisements difficult for them. Second, food and beverage advertising directed at children has the potential to exacerbate the obesity epidemic in the United States.
